Knowing Your Roots

Generally summer is the time of the year when farmers spend a majority of their time out in the fields, but it is also the time when we have the opportunity to clean, repair and upgrade our storage facilities at Nuto Farm Supply before the potato harvest season begins.

A thorough cleaning of our storage facility begins with pressure washing, steam cleaning and disinfecting the floors, walls and ceilings.  This practice is made easier due to our entire facility being made out of concrete.  We also clean and disinfect our entire fan system, which supplies air and humidity to our storage potatoes.

Humidity and air are essential because stored potatoes, which we pile as high as 16 feet, generate heat, which needs to be regulated in order to maintain a quality potato.  Our humidifiers add as much as 100 gallons of water per hour, so it is crucial that they are in top working condition.  Proper calibration of our temperature probes, which we hold within two-tenths of a degree, insures that our “Kitchen Kleen Potatoes” receive an accurate reading throughout the storage.

This year we look forward to implementing a series of phone accessible live stream cameras, which will allow us 24-7 access to all of our storage humidity and temperature data.  As we move closer to harvest, it is reassuring to know that our potatoes will be stored in a clean, sanitized facility and will remain that way until we have shipped our last load of potatoes next spring.
